Steve McLaughlin served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years, retiring with the rank of commander in 2006. He earned a master of science in international affairs from the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, United Kingdom, in 1991 and a master of arts in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College in 2003. Following his departure from the Navy, McLaughlin entered the private sector as the homeland security/counterterrorism director at Sound & Sea Technology, a position in which he still currently serves.
Steve McLaughlin was a Republican candidate for Washington commissioner of public lands in the 2016 elections. After finishing first in Washington's open primary, McLaughlin was defeated by his Democratic opponent, Hilary Franz in the general election.[1] He was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016.
McLaughlin lives in Seabeck, Washington, with his wife, Julia, an athletic director at Navy Base Kitsap.
